What Should I Coach On? How to Choose Your Coaching Niche (Fast)

One of the first (and most paralyzing) questions new coaches ask is: “What should I coach on?”

They’ve felt the pull to coaching. They’re ready to leave behind unfulfilling work. But they get stuck trying to pick the perfect niche—so they delay launching.

At I Love Coaching Co., we’ve worked with hundreds of new coaches, and we always say the same thing:

Don’t pick your niche based on market trends. Pick your niche based on your past transformation.

Here’s how to get clear, fast—using our REAL Coach Method™.

Step 1: EMBARK — Coach the Person You Used to Be

This is the fastest path to confidence and clarity. Look back 1–5 years:

  • What were you struggling with?

  • What turning point changed everything?

  • What did you learn the hard way that others are now trying to figure out?

Your most aligned niche is likely the person you used to be. You know their pain, you speak their language, and you’ve already lived the transformation.

🚀 Try This:

  • Write down one major transformation you’ve gone through. Next, break down the specific steps you took to overcome it. This will form the foundation of your coaching offer.

Step 2: ENGAGE — Validate Before You Overthink It

Once you have clarity on who you help and what problem you solve, don’t go build a brand.

Start talking.

  • DM 5–10 people you think might be a fit.

  • Post about your journey and who you’re now helping.

  • Host a few free mini-sessions or clarity calls.

If people lean in, ask questions, or say, “That’s exactly what I’ve been dealing with”—you’re on the right path.

💡 Example:

One of our coaches validated her niche by offering a free "Clarity Call" on Instagram. She got three DMs and landed her first paid client the following week.

Once people start showing interest, this guide will help you turn conversations into paying clients.

Step 3: ENROLL — Build Your First Offer Around That Niche

Don’t wait to perfect your niche. Prove it in real life.

Create a coaching offer that solves one specific, painful problem your audience is dealing with right now. Think of it as your first rep. You’ll refine it as you go.

📝 Tactical Tip:

Write a one-sentence offer statement: "I help [WHO] overcome [CHALLENGE] through [METHOD]." Keep it specific and focused on transformation.

When it’s time to package and price your offer, this will show you exactly how.

BONUS: What If I Have Too Many Ideas?

Welcome to entrepreneurship. That means you’re creative and experienced. But you can’t coach on 10 things at once.

Pick one problem. Solve it exceptionally well. That becomes your launch point.

🚩 Real Talk:

Coaches who stay vague stay broke. Coaches who focus become magnetic.

Want to build that into a full-time income? Use this 6-figure business plan.

Final Thought

The niche you choose now doesn’t have to be your forever niche—but it does need to be real, relevant, and rooted in your experience. Don’t coach in theory. Coach from transformation.

That’s what people pay for.
